Wound / Burn Care

This class of OTC drugs includes products that prevent infection, speed healing, prevent scarring, or Pro-Tect® the skin. Many products perform more than one function so rather than just using them immediately after a wound or burn, continued use actually prevents scars or other evidence of damage.

Antiseptics / Antibiotics

Immediately after an injury that breaks the skin's surface, it's critical to prevent infection. There are a few ways to do this. Consistent hand washing and use of a residual antiseptic make sure the skin is clean before injury. Alcohol based sanitizers can't really do this well because as soon as the alcohol evaporates, it's killing ability is gone. Foaming hand sanitizers actually leave an antiseptic behind that keeps working long after use. After injury, the use of antiseptic wash and antibiotic ointment can prevent common infections but ours have been shown to kill MRSA*.

*MRSA (Methecillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) is one of the "super bugs" that can kill quickly if not diagnosed and treated early and it usually enters the body through a break in the skin.

Skin Protectants / Scar Prevention

These products produce some kind of occlusive barrier between the skin and the outside environment. Since wounds and burns often destroy the skin's ability to control water loss, it's important to prevent dehydration of the wound because dried tissue in the wound will contribute to the formation of a scar after healing. Some ingredients like petrolatum and lanolin have been used for years to do this but they clog the pores while they are sealing the skin. We have been making products that contain more natural ingredients that do more than just seal the skin...they speed healing and provide nutrients to the skin to help produce soft, supple skin instead of a scar. Ingredients like purified Emu Oil and Grapeseed Oil speed healing while keeping the skin saturated with alpha-lipoic acid and other nutrients.
