Product Description

Active Ingredient 2% Salicylic Acid

Kleer-Plex® Foaming Acne Clarifier is a potent and effective way to prevent acne breakouts and treat blemishes that have already occurred. This mild cleanser prevents the discoloration and scarring that can be the unfortunate result of teenage and young adult acne.

For decades acne product manufacturers have touted the use of high levels of benzoyl peroxide to reduce comedones (clogged hair follicles or pores in the skin) which eventually become acne pimples. Lengthy study of this ingredient has revealed that, while marginally effective in acne treatment or prevention, it significantly increases photosensitivity and overt skin irritation because of the high levels needed for even a slight effect against acne.

Salicylic acid, on the other hand, is highly effective at only 2% so far less chemical exposure is needed go get a superior effect against acne. A beneficial side-effect is the reduction of sebum production in the pores that, over time, reduces the long-term effect of clogged follicles. Those with severe acne (acne vulgaris) who would experience significant scarring due to the degradation and rupturing of the skin that occurs with this condition can realize life-long benefits with the use of salicylic acid, not only in the reduction of scar frequency and severity but also in the dark spots that often follow these blemishes and which can persist for years or decades after the acne itself has cleared up.

Citation

A four-week crossover study to compare the efficacy of an acne cleanser containing 2% salicylic acid with that of a 10% benzoyl peroxide wash was conducted in 30 patients with acne vulgaris. The results demonstrated that only patients treated with the salicylic acid cleanser had a significant reduction in comedones. Patients treated with the salicylic acid cleanser for the first two weeks showed a significant improvement in acne, but worsened during benzoyl peroxide therapy over the following two weeks. In contrast, patients initially treated with the benzoyl peroxide wash for the first two weeks continued to improve with salicylic acid cleanser over the next two weeks.
